I am getting close to the 60k mark on my 1999 Tiburon. I figured since I would be changing the belts I might as well get the Cam changed out too. Which one is the best? I know there has been debates between the 1.8 and XG cams.

Get the OEM 1.8L CAM!
The 2L Beta 2 cam lobes are too thin. Along with other issues.

I'm currently insearch of the 1.8L cam off a good salvaged engine.

WTB: Manual Transmission for a 2000 Tib
SO... where to buy cams? SR has some High performance cams for $710 (if you do not mind waiting) and I do not see a thing at the HP site on cams... how much would the dealer charge for a 1.8 intake?

I just ordered the 1.8 intake cam... $170 with tax from the dealer... ouch! It should be in on monday or tuesday.. then it is just a matter of getting the underdrive pulleys.
I looked into replacing the waterpump too.. I know it is behind the cam belt and I am one of those people who does not like to do things twice.. but the $80 price from the dealer made me choke.. going to shop around some.

I was hoping they were.. but that was the price the computer spit out.. I might call the dealership up towards Philly on friday and ask them how much it is. I do know that a non-abs Master Cylinder runs about $230

Charity Work?
Anybody familier with replacing a cam in the Beta? I got my 1.8 intake cam today and I did not realise that the cams are chained together with the belt only driving the exhaust cam. Do I need a special tool to crack the chain between them?
Never Mind!
I just found where in my Shop manual it details the proceedure.. Unlike the twin cam in my Fiat, the cams in the Beta engine have individual caps that unbolt. Each is marked for position and cam.. makes it a LOT easier than sliding the whole assembly out through the front of the head!

Trust me, it does. The only saving grae on the fiat twin cam.. you can pull the entire cam assembly (there are two!) off of the head with a couple of bolts.. then you undo the rear cap, remove the retainer nut.. and slide the whole cam straight out of the front of the housing. We refer to them as "cam towers" as they sit individually atop the head.. one for the exhaust and another for the intake.. with the plugs and everything inbetween
It's not the best picture.. but it shows what I am talking about.. and what a modified two litre fiat engine looks like in the rare 124 coupe
