Without doing a compression test it'll be a lot more difficult to see the extent of the damage. It would more than likely be able to run (rough) on 3 cylinders and it should at least try pretty hard to fire even if it won't fully run on 2.

^ but if the head is already off, by the time you can do a compression test you're already $70+ worth of gaskets and coolant into it, plus labor. If you've got leaking valves it's time to spend all that again when you reassemble the top end again.

If you have a broken timing belt on this engine, you have bent valves enough that it will NOT run again until you get repairs done.

Beg or borrow a dial indicator and make up a set of holding blocks and measure all your intake valves. Dang I was going to make a DIY for that but never got to it.

I was more posting that for the benefit of other people searching and finding this page. A simple compression test before tearing the head off would tell you a lot.

My Accent ran just fine on 3 cylinders after I snapped my timing belt and bent valves on cylinder 1 to the point of zero compression.

I know people that have gotten lucky and not bent anything after snapping a timing belt on the Beta 2 at least, but they're in the minority. It's at least worth throwing a new belt on and checking it out.

Yeah, two things:

-compression gauge won't be here for another couple days

-after advancing and retarding timing with no luck I knew there was something screwed up in there.

I ended up spraying a ton of brake cleaner into all the ports to see if any of the valves that don't visibly look bent were leaking, and one of the intake valves showed a very little bit seeping through.

I have some valves and seals on order right now but I will probably take the head to a local shop to get everything reground and maybe cleaned up while it's out.

That would be crazy to me if an engine would run still, but if it will it will, learn something every day thanks!

01tibby set aside a few hours for reading and google up Singh Grooves

^^I'll have to post my fire up video lol. It's ugly, (and shaking like a SOB) but it ran. Might not depending on which engine, which valve(s) were bent, etc.

I broke the timing belt on my Accent and it ran just fine after replacing it. Compression was fine. You should have done a compression test before taking the head off.

When I ran was running huge shots of nitrous, I broke a V-power plug's grounding tip which chipped a valve's edge leaving 2 holes. Car ran a little rough, but had plenty of power and I drove it for a few weeks until I got it fixed.

Everything is back together and after 50+ miles it all sounds and runs great. Only replaced the two visibly bent valves and ground down the marks in the pistons. Compression numbers are 191 192 194 192. all th fluids and gaskets were replaced and no leaking as of yet.
