A higher octane rating will NOT give you more horsepower. The here is what the octane rating is. It is the equivalent of the ratio of iso-octne to n-heptane. Gas with a rating of 92 has the same self ignition compression point as a mixture of 92% iso-octane to 8% n-heptane. The reason that higher horsepower cars use higher octane is because of the fact they have hgher compression ratio's, not becaue it gives you more power. If you use lower octane ratings in a higher compression car, it will knock which will break engines. Thank god for knock sensors, which lower the compression by retarding the timeing. If you use high octae fuel, you will waste your money on some small psychological gains that some poeple feel. Its more refined, it goes through 3-5 more distilation cycles, so therefor it will have less impurities. This is why racecar drivers use 110 Octane gasoline, for purity and Octane rating.

Racecar drivers only put a couple miles on each engine, then get a new one. Why wold they care about impurities in gas. If we can go hundreds of thousands of miles on our low octane "dirty" fuel, then that can't be a serious concern. Race engines also have higher compressions than our cars, thats why they use higher octane. Sure some race fuels are specially refined, put that fuel ccasts so much per gallon that it would be recockulous for us to buy every day. companies like Elf and Agip make that kind of fuel, but its basically the same refineries that make 87 octane as 92 octane and the government regulates that. Besides, you cant argue with the facts I posted earlier. I'm not trying to slam you or anything, put it's the truth, no extra horsepower and all fuel is filtered so the only real contaminants are other hydrocarbon and some trace metals.
