Please read info at the site listed below. If your car does not fit the guidelines for using premium fuel, do not waste your money.

one thing i dont understand is that i did a test on the octanes
on 87 i got only 18-20mpg per gallon
on 93 i got around 22-25mpg per gallon

i did 4 runs for each and filled up when the gas light was on.

and i was driving the way i always do so whats the deal

its not in the head either
no performance gains it all evened out because the 87 was cheaper but i didn't have to fill up my tank so quick with 93

A combination of things give you more power with premium gas, not just the Octane. In order to get the Octane numbers (92-94) they must put the fuel through several more refinement and cleaning distilleries, and this results in cleaner better burning fuel, as a sideeffect the Oct Hydro Carbon or Octane molecule is preserved. This is a slower burning hydo carbon molecule and does not detonate until prompted by the ignition. This is why higher Octane gas prevents pre-detonation.

A large part of the reason why Premium gives better mileage is the fact there is less pollutants in it, its very clean and clean burning, meaning for the same volume of Hydro-Carbon molecules, premium will have more energy. The octane will help too, but only in insuring that the fuel is ignited properly and timely.
That article posted earlier looks over this point. Its not just the Octane rating its who refined your fuel is.

It's not in the government's energy policy interests to highlight the environmental benefits of more expensive gasoline rolleyes.gif
