I need to know if a 2nd Gen Transmission will work in a 1st Gen. If so what all mods have to be made. Any one have a quick link or list of what all I will need to switch auto to a manual?

the manual trans in the RD1 and RD2 should be more or less the same. Maybe only a few differences, but not enough to make it more than a simple bolt in.

They are identical.

Have fun.

Oh, search, it's been covered.

well, not identical, but pretty damn close.

4th and 5th gear ratios are a little different:

probably a good thing though. it would give you a little bit more gas mileage when you are in the gears you dont "race" in.

Do I need an adapter, something that someone suggested. Also when swapping for the manual, what about the axles some people say it is recommended but not necessary, so what will it hurt if I keep my axles from the auto?

You should not need an adaptor. You will need to lose the "flex plate" on the engine that holds the torque converter (always wondered what it converted it to) and bolt on a flywheel and clutch. You will also need the pedals, shifter, and all the clutch related parts.

I do not know about the axles.

The internals are not significantly different. Jaws021 has managed to blow/shred RD and XD Trannies tongue.gif

It will bolt up with no problems, but there will be one bolt hole that is unused on the XD tranny compared to the RD tranny

Random is correct... i have own3d a 99 tranny, a rebuilt 99 tranny, an 01, and i think my 03 tranny might be fubar in a couple of months.

All trannies will fit without a problem until you start with the 04 series.

Although the 02 and the 03 trannies are both XD, the casing is a bit different.

The 03 tranny needs to be grnded a bit on the outside of the rear mount. This is just so the RD tranny mount can sit flush...

The 03 tranny seems to have gotten me the best fuel economy. I can sit at 80mph at around 2800 rpm
