You could NEVER judge an engine for external appereance, NEVER. What you see from th outside is the external parts of the block, you donīt even see the head itself, because its hidden by the valve cover. And the most important thing, there could be like hundreds milimetrical differences that would make one engine different to anotherone. Besides, if you are going to invest in a block, why don't just get the head that works with that block? In engine technology, you don't have to invent anything (leave that to the engineers at Hyundai R&D) just stick to the known and proven. I think it would be impossible that a head for smaller block work well in a bigger block without serious machining that could spoiled the internal gas flow on the original design.

One more thing, here we got the 3 diff. Betas, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0. My wifes car has the 1.8 (and damn it, she won't inherit that engine to me ) and beleive me, the three of them LOOK exactly, exactly the same, no slight differences from the outside.

Nop, I there aren't many Hunday tuners here, so I have not seen the engines by pieces altogether. I couldn't tell just by looking at them the differences.

As red stated, the EXTERNAL of the 1.6L 1.8L and 2.0L are just about identical. The 1.6L should have 1.6L cast on the block, whereas the 1.8L and 2.0L have 1.8/2.0 cast into the block.

The "blocks" and "heads" are milled from the same castings, so they are basically the same, however, the 1.8L 2.0L share the same BORE, but the 1.8L has a shorter STROKE. The 1.6L shares STROKE with the 1.8L, but has a different BORE.

Because the pistions of the 1.6L are physically smaller, the combustion chambers are phyiscally smaller to match the pistions. That is why a 1.6L head would not work on a 2.0L block. The piston would be significanly larger than the combustion chamber, and your quench/squish areas would be way to large.

It is possible to make a 1.8L into a 2.0L. You just need 2.0L rods and a 2.0L crank (gee, really simply, let's do it this weekend! wink ).

You could BORE your 1.6L out to a 1.7L. You could then have the crank re-worked, or maybe even use the 2.0L crank and rods to get close to 1.9L However, I'm not sure if the 2.0L crank and rods fit into a 1.6L. In THEORY, they should. The custom pistions you would have to have made to fit the larger bores would also have to be made custom to fit the stock hyundai 2.0L rods. Since you are already doing all this custom pistion/rod/bore/stroke/crank work, you might as well aquire a 2.0L and take that out to 2.2L or 2.3L.

Everything is possible with money. You can do anything you want to your 1.6L. You just have to find some way to pay for it. I'm guessing that you can get a 2.0L shipped to you for under $1500. That makes the most cost effective solution for you, to aquire a 2.0L and import it into the phillipines. Any Custom piston/rod/crank/bore/combustion chamber re-work is going to cost more than $1500.

As a side option...RPW builds up 2.0L betas in several states of tune/HP...for starting around $2000 and going up to ?????. That might be the best "bang for the buck" HP wise, but I'm not sure how much it would cost to import an engine from Oz to the Phillipines.

I forget which side, but the block will actually say "J2 20" or "J2 18", etc depending on which engine it is.

I'm going to get a 2.0 in the near future. And turbo it too.

Im just asking for curiosity's sake.

Since we're talking bout heads, could a 2.0 or 1.8 cam fit in the 1.6 head?

In yes, it is the same valve train and cam running gear/chain/belt/journals.

Yes, it will FIT IN, but the cam specs are certainly different, don't expect any gains throwing a 2.0 cam in a 1.6 (I mean, a performance cam designed for 2.0 not necessarily will improve your 1.6). Just remember 2.0 show gains when installing thwe 1.8 cam, which is I think the same cam as the 1.6 Beta.

*lol*, he didn't ask it it was better, he just asked if it would fit! *grin*

My guess, is that he's hoping that 2.0L/1.8L performance cams will fit/work/make more HP in his 1.6L, and the answer is yes. The 1.6L runs and moves just like the 2.0L, only smaller and less powerful, so you should see similar gains out of the 1.6L as you would out of the 2.0L in a proportional ammount. If the cams gained 10% on the 2.0L they should still gain 10% on the 1.6L, and be reusable should he ever get a 2.0L

Alright... since were talking, what about the 2.2liter from the Santa Fe? Is that a beta engine? if so would a head swap there be any good?
