Hallo,
I was wondering..... Does puting a "normal sized" tire on a relatively wide rims, making them streached a bit hurt as for performance wise? cornering abilities? safety wise? life time of tire?
To see what i mean, check out that thread:

The guy has 215/40/16 on 9 inch wide rims, rather than the "usual" 7.
Is it a good or really bad idea? It sure looks good, and lets you fit wide rims on our tibs, since they don't rub.
Thanks for any useful info!

while it does look a bit odd, it infact does increase the performance of a tire. By "Stretching" it across 9 inches instead of the more usual 7, you are in fact stiffening the sidewall by removing any and all side to side flex that it normally would have. You have to remember, the width of a tire at the tread is not always an absolute. 205/45/16 can be different from tire maker to tire maker. Goodyears are traditionally a bit "wide" while Yokohama tend to be on the narrow side.
Stretching the tire across such a wide rim though, does result in a MUCH stiffer and rough ride. To see the cushioning I am talking about in action.. go up to your car and push against it next to the tire. Not front to back.. but side to side. The tire should roll a bit on the rim. With a "Stretched" tire, you are not going to get that "roll" back and forth.

Thanks Mad!
How to compensate the the "ride-quality" issue with suspension tuning, lets say I have Coilovers... Ask for softer springs? Less stiff strut?
While trying to increase overall performance.
Thanks guys!

people forget that tyres have a "Spring rate" too. While your coilovers might have (for instance) 400lb an inch spring rate.. tyres can have a rate in the thousands when properly inflated.

1. Just 'cause you Americans (Sorry... & Canadians) spell it wrong, it doesn't mean the rest of the world has to wink1.gif
2. There would be no extra tread surface on the road... Not noticeably more anyway.
